Yellow Belly Turtles for a Different Type of Pet

Baby pet yellow belly sliders can be kept in a small aquarium in the beginning. But they get bigger than that cute little baby you brought home and soon need considerably more room. And even though they are aquatic animals, don’t just put them in the aquarium with fish. Not only will they quickly outgrow most fish tanks, but they very much need dry land too. They are cold-blooded and, in order to maintain a healthy body temperature, they need a roomy dry area where they can move closer to or away from a heat source. For basking, a UV-B lamp will do, but the turtles much prefer real sunlight, and you should try for that whenever possible. They need plenty of room to move around, and rocks or something like that to climb on and enjoy the sunlight until they are completely dry to remain hcg drops healthy. This isn’t as hard as it sounds. Most large pet stores have appropriate turtle aquariums, basking lamps, perches, and whatever a new pet owner needs.

Although they will outgrow that tiny aquarium they came in, they aren’t as large as some of their turtle cousins. Males tend to stay between 5 and 8 inches [13-20cm] long, while females get a little bigger, at 8-13 inches [20-33cm]. Their carapace (top shell) can range from olive, to brown, to black, all with unique yellow stripes. Males tend to get darker with age, and sometimes their colors are affected by the environment. As the name implies, their double-hinged plastrons (bottom shells) are a yellow to pale green bottom shell. The double-hinge allows the yellow belly slider to close themselves completely up in their shells if frightened (unlike their poor cousins the snapping turtles, who are only single-hinged and who can’t get entirely into their closed shells).

Turtles in general are omnivores, and so are our little yellow belly friends. They will eat almost anything they can catch. They love spiders and insects, slugs and snails, and even the occasional relationship advice small toad or salamander, if one is slow enough to get caught! As they mature and stop growing, they eat more fruits and vegetables, plants and berries. They are not picky or hard to feed. In the wild, if nothing else is available they will eat decaying plant matter or even carrion, although, of course this is not the diet recommended to keep your pet healthy. Many species are diurnal locksmiths melbourne and tend to feed in the early morning or early evening.

Of course, even though they are beautiful and delightful pets, the yellow belly turtle that is known as the yellow belly slider is not just a pet, and can be seen in the wild, near slow-moving waters in the Central United States.
